What's Happening at Grand Island Rotary
A meaningful time at our 9/11 Breakfast Meeting: Chris Learman reading a summary,  and timeline, of that eventful day.  Then several Members offering Remembrances
of their activities and thoughts during and after the attack.  Very proper words and thoughts to reflect on that day and the future that it brought.

Now - how many times and ways can we say it:
Please come to the Club Assembly, Sep 25 at School District Office, and come with your thinking cap on, to help plan the future of our Club!

Note that we have our Adopt-A-Hiway cleanup of Beaver Island Pkwy on Saturday, Oct 5 - mark your calendar.  Yes, there will be High School students from interact & Gov't class, but we need you to round out the crew!

On Wed, Oct 16, 7 – 9 PM, we in G I Rotary will host a Candidates Night (for Town Supervisor candidates only) in the High School auditorium.  Chair Mike Billoni will arrange participation by High School Interact and ‘Government studies’ classes.  We do hope you will attend – the format will include candidates responding to pre-submitted written questions only – watch this space and publicity that will run, for ways to submit questions!

If anyone is interesting in helping with Meals on Wheels, please talk to Dan Flaim.

Membership Moment
  • Club Assembly, Sep 25 - Futuring Workshop
Please make every effort to come and participate in what is sure to be a lively discussion.  It will be a casual working evening, starting at 6 PM, at the GI School District offices on Ransom Rd. Subs, or wraps, will be brought in to eat.  The results this night will help set priorities for goals over the next 3 years so everyone's input is vital to the club.  We do not want to lose what you value while expanding our appeal to a broader range of potential members.  How do you want to spend your time with club members, what are your priorities for service and social get togethers?  If meetings bore you, what would juice it up while keeping the business of the club rolling along?

  • Please remember to bring copies of the Rotarian Magazine to Pres. Elect Sherry at the next meeting, for placement in waiting rooms around Grand Island.  Of course that is after you have read it!
Rotary Beyond Grand Island's Shores
  • ROTARY and its concept of 'Service Above Self' starts local with a community minded Club.  Our G I Rotary is important in itself and can do great things locally.  But there is so much more Rotary International does; please be aware and participate.   Here are some items to extend yourself and your concept of Rotary:
  •
  • An opportunity to rub shoulders with RI Leaders from US Northeast and Ontario - volunteer to pick them up from Buffalo airport, drive them to Niagara Falls, CA, for a major Zone Institute there running Sep 17 - 21.  See President Dick Earne for details.
  •
  • A unique chance to see & hear the RI President Elect, Holger Knaack of Germany at Annual Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner in Rochester, Monday, Sep 23. President Dick Earne will arrange car-pooling to hear a notable Rotarian and meet with Rotary leaders from all Upstate NY and Niagara, Ontario.
  •
  • To develop your Leadership Skills, Network and increase Rotary knowledge, participate in RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute).  Sessions covering all levels of leadership, both for yourself, and for your Club, will be Saturday Oct 5 at NCCC in Sanborn.  Talk to Pres. Dick and others who have taken these sessions - they are worthwhile, both personally and for the Club!
  •
  • How about enriching yourself, and your partner, by joining a Rotary Friendship Exchange to Sweden and Latvia in May / June of 2020.  What's involved - generally couples will first host, then visit, couples in the partnered area over a 4 week period to gain understanding of the sameness, and differences, of lives of Rotarians between here and Sweden / Latvia. Of course, tourism also! Sound interesting? Email John Crossingham: Xngham@cogeco.net for info.
  •
  • Our neighbor club in Niagara Falls announced a new meeting location and schedule.  They will now be meeting at 6 PM the 4th Thursday of each Month at N.F. Boys & Girls Club, 725 17th St N F 14301.   It is good to visit another club from time to time and pick up ideas, broaden your connections with other Rotarians and socialize.
  •
  • Ever wonder what other Clubs do? Lockport Rotary is sponsoring a bike / walk along newly opened segment of the Canalway Trail, between Pendleton and Tonawanda Creek at the Heritage Village, Amherst (specifically to the Rotary Pavilion in the Heritage Village). And it raises $'s forPolio Plus! OK, it's same day as our Adopt-a-Hiway, Oct 5; we are not suggesting going, we are asking you to think of all the ways we could have activities and raise funds.
