Evening Meeting on 7:15 PM Sep 23 (by Zoom)
with our District Governor, Frank Adamson

On Sep 23, 7:15 PM, we will meet (by Zoom) with our District Governor of the Fonthill, Ontario Rotary Club, to both explain to him what we, on Grand Island, have been doing, and to hear from him the plans, goals, and achievements of the greater Rotary world around us. DG Frank is confident he can help all our Clubs Building a Strong Future, especially growing District resources and their usefulness to Clubs, such as ours. Listen in, for a dynamic speech and to help support our Club at the same time. This
This Wed, Sep 9, at 7:15 AM, an Interesting Morning Meeting -
From just up the the road (or downstream, however you judge direction) we will hear from Dr Tom Gerbasi of the Lewiston, Niagara on the Lake Rotary, about his experience as part of a Vocational Training Team, traveling to Brazil to train young medical personnel there. An excellent example of the unique reach of Rotary International, using the vast array of talents available in dedicated Rotarians to help thruout the world.

Great Service Projects these past Few Weeks:

Filled Backpacks for G I School Children, And 'Sneeze Guards' for Their Schools -

Hard work by a number of your Members, and partnering help of both the GI High School DECA Club, and UB Rotaract Club, gave us two excellent, and highly successful service projects the past few weeks. First: collecting, and filling, backpacks for school kids with supplies they will need for the coming year. Many of you donated supplies, backpacks, and $'s, then the High School DECA Club, and their advisor Cheryl Chamberlin, organized the collected supplies, and stuffed over 50 back packs for delivery to the GI schools where needy students will receive them.

At almost the same times, several Members (President Sherry, PDG Dick, Jerry Barlow and his wife Barbara) plus a number of Members of the UB Rotaract Club helped the school system with its massive task of setting up hundreds of 'sneeze guard' clear plastic barriers to go on each student desk in the school system and help minimize any Covid-19 spread when students are in school this year.

Are You Following Our Facebook and Web Site Pages?

Did you see this?

We hope you have been checking Rotary Club of Grand Island NY on Facebook, or www.rotaryclubgi.org on the Internet every few days. Your Club is active and we are doing our best to show it. You might have missed being in person at our Annual Donation to the Miracle League in August, at least you could see photo and words about it on FB or web:

Support Rotary's Polio Plus by biking!

Oct. 24 - Niagara Falls, NY to Youngstown

Our club will be represented by at least two bicycling enthusiasts in the District DR. RON MERGL MEMORIAL Pedal for Polio on October 24th. The ride is being renamed this year in honor of Dr. Mergl, Past President of Niagara Falls (Ont.) Rotary, who passed away this year.  He had made trips to Africa & India for polio Immunization drives; in addition, as a veterinarian, he had been to Africa to distribute rabies vaccines.  Bikers will be riding to raise funds for the Rotary Foundation Polio eradication efforts.  We hope EACH of you will either help sponsor one of our riders, or donate directly to the very important POLIO PLUS.  If interested in riding, passing out water bottles or celebrating as they pass the finish line please let us know.  The US side of the ride is from Niagara Falls US to Youngstown.

District helps make Grant Applications Easier!

The District now has a really nice Events page making it easy to register for upcoming Zoom sessions.  We will be looking for a couple of members to attend Grant Qualifying sessions to qualify us for funds to support specific projects like the Well and the Pandemic support of the drive through for food distribution at Salvation Army. This year the program is being run via 'Zoom', and to be most convenient it is broken into three short sessions on Oct 3, 17 and Nov 14. Talk to President Sherry, or Past Pres. Dick Earne, about this valuable and important set of sessions.

Planning Beaver Isle Pkwy Clean-Up, but When?

We need to do our semi-annual Adopt-a-Hiway cleanup of the Beaver Isle Pkwy. As you remember from Spring, the availability of H S Interact (or other) students is 'uncertain' due to schools need to first concentrate on getting those folks back to serious study! With both that uncertainty, and the schedules of many of us, we will try to schedule Pkwy clean-up, perhaps Oct 10; but other dates possible - what do you think - tell President Sherry!

Grand Island Rotary Goals for 2020 / 21

The Board met with President Sherry at a meeting last week and ratified goals for 2020-2021 which are inline with the club Strategic plan we prepared last winter:

  3. Ensure sustainability by participation in District training / event opportunities – RLI, PETS, Grant Seminar, Secretary Forum, District Conference, Stream Convention sessions
  4. Continue our support of Youth / Young Leaders
