Evening Meeting on 7:15 PM Dec 16 (by Zoom)
What does Census see in Future
for WNY, Buffalo, Grand Island?

Our second Zoom meeting for December is next Wed, Dec 16, 7:15 PM. We will feature a program that looks at the possible future for WNY, Buffalo, Grand Island, based on how the 2020 Census numbers are shaping up. Russell Wilson of the Cornell U, Buffalo Office of their ILR (Industrial & Labor Relations) College will outline some of the downs, and ups, of population swings in the area. As Grand Island considers, sometimes with dread, sometimes joy, new apartments or warehouses, we should all think of the future. When President Sherry sends out an invite for Wed. evening respond. President Sherry will send you the ‘browser code’ for attending this evening meeting.

It's the Holiday Season -
Warm Wishes from Officers and Board of
Rotary Club of Grand Island

Hanukkah has started, Christmas and Kwanzaa approach, most feel that 2021 can't come soon enough! Let us all step back, enjoy the Holidays and of course reflect on The Year To Forget, count what blessings we have, and pray fervently for 2021 to be a year of PEACE and GOOD WILL. I join all the Officers in wishing you the Best for this Holiday Season

Let's Think about Grand Island Rotary: 2021/22
Common sense & tradition call for our Club to select Officers for the July 2021 / 22 year early (about now), to give those Officers time to prepare. So – who will be those Officers? Before you sit back and say – let them sort it out – them is all of us. In a small club like G I Rotary, we must all examine our thoughts and commitment to Rotary. Be ready for serious consideration in January. FYI – Because of health issues, Sherry Miller will not be taking a second year of President, as has sometimes been necessary recently. Think about your role in our Club.

That was a Great Meeting Last Week

Great ‘breakfast time’ meeting last week as we heard a good talk by Islander & potential Member David Garcia of Edward Jones Financial – 10 Steps to Start Good Financial Planning. We also inducted New Member: Lt. Bassey Archibong, Corps Officer/Pastor of Tonawanda Salvation Army. Grand Island Rotary is on the move, make sure you are an active part of it. As we approach 2021, please think about how you can help Grand Island Rotary create Zoom meetings (at least for the next few months) that are both informative and ENJOYABLE. Then we can move on to ENLARGE the Club!

H.S. Interact collected Toiletries

The High School Interact Club has, with Zoom sessions, organized under new Advisor, Kari Nowak, with help from Rotary Contact, Mike Billoni.  They conducted a good project to collect travel size toiletries for the homeless shelters in Buffalo, Niagara Falls. President Sherry helped them sort and distribute those toiletries last week; we will see more efforts by the High School group - hopefully there will be ways to create more interaction between Interact group and the Rotary Club of Grand Island as a whole.

Neighbors Foundation has Major Effort in
December Holiday Season
The Covid restrictions (yellow, orange or whatever), plus common sense, have made in-person service help difficult this Holiday season. But there is a way all can participate in helping this Holiday season. The Neighbors Foundation (remember, we formed this group 45 years ago) has their ‘Share Your Happiness’ fund drive to support their distribution of Tops food and turkey cards, plus Target cards for any children or teens, to 38 distressed families or Seniors on Grand Island. You may remember massive food collection and distribution by the Foundation in past years, this year they will do their necessary help to those less fortunate on Grand Island with Tops & Target Gift Cards, and minimal person-to-person contact. But that has been costly in Dollars! Please consider sending check to Neighbors Foundation at P. O. Box 155 Grand Island NY, or donating on-line thru their web site http://www.gineighbors.org

We Will Ring Salvation Army Red Kettle Bells in December
Set aside some time on Saturdays, December 12 and 19
There still is a strong need to help the Salvation Army with ‘Red Kettle Bell Ringing’ (aka fund raising) this Holiday Season – perhaps you can help Saturday Dec 19 at our G I Tops. Per the Covid restrictions it will ‘solitary’ Tops entry door, masked but cheery (we hope), encouraging folks to drop a $ or two in kettle, or activating direct credit card donation that will be active. Consider your circumstances, contact President Sherry if you can help: (716) 417-4937 or send her a message at the link below.
Grand Island Rotary Goals for 2020 / 21
The Board has met with President Sherry and ratified goals for 2020-2021 which are inline with the club Strategic plan we prepared last winter:
  1. Increase the club membership & engagement

  4. Continue our support of Youth / Young Leaders
