Annual Undie Sunday Collection Starting

You probably know the project - we have done this more that 10 years - collect new underwear, socks for all, men, women and children, then sort and deliver to both homeless and battered women shelters in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The need is greater than ever at the shelters that handle homeless and other disadvantaged folks in WNY.

Several Members have already signed up to deliver the hampers to Island locations - most churches, schools, Town Hall, Library, Heron Port apartments and businesses including Eggsquisite Eats, Island Shipping. and Niagara Frontier Publications. Rotary Members will also be contacting neighbors, friends, all, to encourage buying a pack or two ALL SIZES NEEDED, of underwear, socks to fill those hampers from now till March 7. Then a big sorting session on March 8 at the Thruway Welcome Center off Alvin Rd!

Evening Meeting by Zoom on Feb. 24, 7:15 PM
Member (and world traveler) Hank Kammerer
offers some good (and not so good) travel tips!
You may know that Hank K (AKA Bulletin Editor) and his late wife did a good bit of travel in their early retirement years. But are you properly prepared to handle mounting / dismounting camels, where do pickpockets lurk, do you really need to pay attention to 'last tender back' schedules during a port call? If you want official answers go to the Rick Steves web site, but for the HUMAN SIDE of travel tips, be sure you are available for our Zoom meeting, 7:15 PM, Wednesday, Feb 24. There will also be important word on the status of our big Undie Sunday clothing collection for the homeless.
Let's Think about Grand Island Rotary: 2021/22
After much soul searching, and considering the great things Grand Island Rotary does, Sherry Miller has agreed to take a Second Year as our President (2021/22) PROVIDED the rest of us step up to the challenge of handling our share. We all can do it, it takes effort, but is worth it. In a small club like G I Rotary, we must all examine our thoughts and commitment to Rotary.  Think about your role in our Club: how can you as a Club Member ensure a successful year?  We are seeking anyone who would like to join the board as a Director. Plus:

Volunteer to participate in a POD then follow up with program ideas and meeting activities.
Volunteer to set up and run the Zoom call for a meeting.
Volunteer to be the chair or team member for Highway Clean-ups, Undie Sunday, Shred-It or Bell Ringing.  What do you think about a project to clean a portion of our waterfront? Talk to President Sherry -

Virtual District Conference' March 15 - 20

This Virtual District 7090 Conference, a get-together of all WNY and Niagara Peninsula Rotary Clubs, evenings of 3/15, 16, 18, plus Saturday 3/20, offers a great chance to hear how other Clubs succeeded with projects, fund raising, etc. Opening evening, the 15th, features Learn About Beer and Rotary Social – you don’t want to miss that!

The Tuesday, 3/16 evening session includes a talk by the Rotary International President in 2022/23 – Jennifer Jones of nearby Windsor Ontario, with the theme that evening – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. There is panel discussion & project presentations on Saturday March 20. It does require pre-registration, see details on the District web site: www.rotary7090.org .
Grand Island Schools during the Pandemic
A Review by Supt. Brian Graham
It was wonderful to have a 'first look' at Dr Graham's review of what Grand Island schools have been thru this past year at our 'breakfast' meeting last week, Feb 10. Yes, there were cute, freshly scrubbed youngsters getting their first taste of school, complete with masks and temp checks. There were also concerns and hassles of keeping true education rolling. And there were dollars, then more dollars, and more, all to make the schools as safe as possible. Thanks, Brian, it was great to review an 'unforgettable' time, tho we wished it didn't happen!
